What's Inside the Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive within a psychic prison built from the past of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in episode 6 forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—an event that may just hold the secret to his downfall permanently.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern
When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event went deeper than a defensive killing.
Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the mine shaft incident was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to give to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft is that employee.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is revealed about Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held samples of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, which triggered the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The prequel shows that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later fundamentally changed. From then on, he struggles with the control of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
Confronting Terror
Henry's enduring terror linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. Even as he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.
His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a decisive edge in the ultimate battle to come.
