The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the referee decided that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for the French striker in attack instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally outstanding in defensive duties, combining effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, even with having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
