The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Ice Cream Flavor
The co-founders of the famous ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the business alongside Jerry Greenfield, disclosed how he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of an individual collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Involving Founders versus Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the continuing tension between the world-famous ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation that acquired the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "maintaining its activist principles".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming a Symbol for Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated via an Instagram video that he is creating an innovative watermelon-based sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that match those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism and Current Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established several years back to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder revealed that he plans to develop additional frozen dessert varieties that address issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after decades with the organization, mentioning concerns that the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
