The Former French President to Pen Jail Diary Detailing Three Weeks Behind Bars
Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a personal account in the coming weeks named Notes from a Cell, detailing his time served behind bars.
The announcement came shortly following Sarkozy gained freedom as he appeals the court ruling for illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to acquire presidential race money from the government of the late Libyan dictator.
Time in Custody: Solitary Musings
“Behind bars visibility is limited, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in one passage, suggesting the book centers around his musings while in isolation rather than extensive analysis regarding the strained and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.
“Silence escapes me, which doesn’t exist in La Santé, where noise is constant sound,” he adds. “The racket persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is strengthened in prison.”
Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal
At his release request hearing, the former leader had appeared by video link from his cell, depicting prison life as gruelling. He expressed in court: “I wish to commend to all the prison staff, displaying remarkable compassion, and who have made this nightmare tolerable – because it is a nightmare.”
“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal forced upon me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark every inmate due to its intensity.”
Historical Context
The former president, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, was the first former head from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure from France to serve time in prison.
Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.
Books in Prison
It is not certain did he manage to review and analyze the volumes he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, where a blameless person ends up incarcerated but escapes to exact retribution.
Daily Reality
The former leader was placed in isolation due to safety concerns in a space roughly 100 square feet with his own shower and toilet in the Paris jail in the city. Security personnel stayed in a neighbouring cell.
Reports indicated that he consumed solely dairy snacks while inside worried that meals provided could have been tampered with. He had facilities for self-catering but refused this, as per accounts. It is uncertain whether Sarkozy will write about what he ate in prison.
Defense Viewpoint
Sarkozy’s lawyer, who saw him regularly every day throughout the jail term, informed the court security would be better out of prison rather than in custody. “There were threats against his life, has heard screaming after dark and the urgent intervention in an adjacent room when a prisoner self-harmed.”
Charges and Sentence
His incarceration began on 21 October following the judiciary gave him five years in prison on conspiracy charges in connection with efforts to acquire election financing for his 2007 presidential race.
He maintains his innocence and has appealed against the verdict, and a fresh trial set for the coming spring.
