The Details Known Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 lives perished and over 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have stated the number of fatalities remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but police believe their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the victims who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting began. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Officially, a senior official declared that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
