Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Selection in English Test Series Squad
The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just 48 hours before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir securing a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s inclusion suggests that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about their pace bowler’s fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter expected to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.
Ground Conditions Favor Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged several past matches.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Of those 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners combined have only eight.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely decision.
Spin Options Considered
Previously there was speculation that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the team to offer some spin while additionally bolstering the batting lineup.
But McCullum has opted to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still England’s best spinner.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” he said of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and excel out here.”
