Severe Rains Worsen Conditions for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, Agencies Warn

Heavy precipitation over the past week have intensified the extremely difficult circumstances of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced residents in the territory, according to humanitarian agencies.

"Horrendous" Weather Brings Severe Risks

A representative detailed the weather overnight as "terrible", with downpours so heavy that up to 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the ground.

"The recent weather was really horrendous for the residents. The storms were so strong... And the gusts were so forceful," noted the spokesperson.

There is extreme concern that minors sheltering in temporary structures in damp attire will contract hypothermia and other ailments.

Fatalities and Significant Destruction

Medical officials have confirmed that one baby has passed away from exposure and a minimum of 11 other people have been killed in structural failures triggered by the severe weather.

Additional accounts put a greater number of casualties. Officials said that numerous structures had totally fallen and many others had collapsed partially.

Relief Efforts Seen as Inadequate

Groups have escalated distribution of tents, bedding and garments after the truce commenced, but they emphasize there is still not enough aid getting in.

"We are striving constantly to bring in that aid and to distribute it, but the size of the necessities is so enormous that we still have many thousands of people and children who are really enduring hardship each evening," stated one spokesperson.

Long-Term Concerns and Truce Terms

The subsequent part of the truce involves proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with post-war governance, the removal of military forces, and other provisions.

Humanitarian bodies have highlighted the necessity for "greater and continuous aid to meet urgent and future requirements."

The conflict was initiated by an attack in the autumn of 2023. Subsequent military operations have resulted in a high number of casualties in the territory, based on health ministry reports.
