Russell Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Remarks
NY Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on social media this week, responding to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated via social media. "Had no idea you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the media."
Wilson's response directly referenced the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the New Orleans Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized players for making hard hits on rival teams. As a result, Payton received a suspension from the league for a full year.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton delivered comments after the Broncos' historic 33-32 win over the Giants. Payton suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had told team owner John Mara that he would prefer playing against Wilson instead of Dart.
"I spoke to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" the coach stated.
Background of the Coach-QB Partnership
- Wilson was traded to the Broncos from Seattle in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before the team brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in broadcasting.
- The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a move that prevented the player from getting injured.
Had Wilson stayed on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious breakup between the quarterback and his coach.
