Much like Storm Claudia tore through the north-west the previous evening, Manchester City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a emphatic three-nil victory for the City coach's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that clearly signaled their championship potential as they consolidated their standing at the league summit.

Successive Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline marked consecutive Women's Super League losses for Skinner's side for the first time since May 2024, putting them a significant margin off the top team with their title hopes hanging by a thread.

The Red Devils' capability to balance league and continental football with a small roster has been a widely debated issue since they qualified for the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always felt like this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this capability. Sadly for the away side, they seemed fatigued throughout, the historic win against the French side clearly having taken a toll.

Lineup Adjustments

Marc Skinner had attempted to rotate the squad with a several alterations. Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Galton all provided vigor, although the omission of the on-form Melvine Malard to the bench raised a few eyebrows.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no similar fitness worries. Jeglertz made a single alteration from the previous win over the Toffees with Hemp making her initial starting appearance since returning from a physical setback.

Dominant First Half

The storm clouds started to gather for the United boss and his squad from the opening minute. This was a demonstration of the power from City whose energetic attack played with and pulled the visitors apart with a sublime initial 45 minutes performance that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This left the home team in a commanding position and left United struggling. In advance of this match, United had allowed just six in this league campaign but they fell apart in the wake of Manchester City's creative prowess.

Initial Opportunities

The warning signs came quickly when Vivianne Miedema used her physicality to muscle Zigiotti off the ball, only to send her shot off target. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a quick shift in the ball saw Hemp allowed the space to strike a shot home from range.

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from Skinner at the interval as Malard was introduced for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the match. Former Manchester City player Park came closest, hitting the upright, but the visitors were lacking in ideas and were unable to produce a one shot on goal.

The hosts, in contrast, could have extended their advantage when a delightful Miedema through ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the hosts. Previously unable to beat any team who finished above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against the Gunners and United to position them in a strong standing after nine matches.
