Kristi Noem Asserts Military Shooting Perpetrator Was Radicalized in the United States
South Dakota's governor, serving as top security official, asserted on Sunday that the individual in the military incident in the nation's capital was radicalized within the United States and pointed fingers at the current government, despite the fact that the individual's asylum was approved under Donald Trump.
Background of the Shooting Suspect
The shooting suspect, in his late twenties the person in question, was awarded asylum under the Trump administration in April 2025. He had served alongside CIA backed units in the Middle Eastern nation, arriving in the United States in September 2021 under an Operation Allies Welcome.
“We believe he was radicalized since he’s been here in this country,” Noem said on a national news program. “We do believe it was through local networks and region, and we’re going to continue to interview his contacts, relatives, those in communication.”
Political Reactions and Immigration Review
The Trump administration leveraged the event as grounds to halt and review asylum and green card applications.
The secretary asserted “vetting is happening when they come into the country, and that was completely abandoned under Joe Biden’s administration”.
“Relevant screening data was collected by Joe Biden’s administration,” said she. “The vetting process all happened during the current term.”
Removal Flights and Judicial Disputes
Noem also refuted that she disobeyed a judge’s order when she ordered deportation flights to El Salvador to proceed, attributing the issue to “activist” and “extreme” judges.
The comments came in response to inquiries on the news show on Sunday about whether Noem was responsible to proceed with the removal operations for migrants from Venezuela earlier this year, as the Department of Justice claimed.
“Our efforts will persist acting appropriately, continue to work safeguarding citizens, no matter what activist judicial figure emerges attempting to hinder progress,” Noem commented.
Noem also was featured on ABC’s This Week on the weekend, where she confirmed the flights were under her authority.
“Certainly, I made that decision and that decision was under my complete authority in compliance with regulations and legal framework and the leadership of this president focused on removing high-risk individuals and organized crime groups from the nation,” Noem stated. “We face a partisan judicial figure and I understand, you know, we’re still in litigation challenging this judicial intervention who’s continuously tried to stop us ensuring public safety.”
Judicial Assertions and Contempt Investigation
The Department of Justice asserted the action did not violate the court mandate. US district Judge the presiding official in Washington DC had directed deportation flights mid-flight turn back in spring 2025, but Noem ordered flights underway carrying migrants to the destination proceed, with the justice department claiming the individuals were outside US jurisdiction.
Boasberg has been undergoing a compliance investigation into whether the former government disregarded his March court order.
