Italian Watchdog Criticizes Ski Pass Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable

A leading Italian consumer association are sounding the alarm over what they call entirely unreasonable price increases for lift tickets this winter season, cautioning that skiing could become an exclusive privilege for affluent individuals.

Significant Cost Rises Across Italy

Across the Alpine regions and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern territories to the ski runs of central Italy, prices are set to rise by as much as 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to fresh research.

The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which provides entry to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now set visitors back €86 per day during the current winter. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a daily ski pass is expected to reach €60, after experiencing significant overcrowding during the previous winter.

Annual Ticket Prices and Additional Expenses

At the same time, annual skiing tickets will vary between €755 per adult in the Abruzzo region to as much as €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.

The expense of hiring ski equipment has also increased, along with lodging costs and restaurant prices throughout mountain resorts.

Watchdog Leader Points to Unreasonable Hikes

Gabriele Melluso, leading the consumer protection group, stated that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to increased utility expenses, resort maintenance, and demand for better equipment—were completely unjustified and not acceptable.

"Particularly since inflation in Italy are managed effectively and energy tariffs, which had increased expenses for mountain facility managers in 2022, have stabilized at previous levels," he explained.

He added that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, completely.

Tourism Decline and Broader Context

Melluso observed a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the current winter period, with a million fewer domestic visitors hitting the slopes compared to the previous year due to increasing expenses.

Despite these increases, Italy remains a more affordable destination for winter sports fans in western Europe compared to neighboring Switzerland, France, and Austrian locations.

Olympic Context

The growing concern over skiing costs comes as the nation gets ready to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between February 6 and 22. The nation's top diplomat, Antonio Tajani, announced on Friday that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations calling for a "worldwide ceasefire" during the international event.

"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a message of peace and dialogue... to stop warfare during the Olympics," he declared.
