From The Last of Us Co-Director Comes a New Game That Seems Unfamiliar But Evolves The Same Ideas.

Bruce Straley responsible for the iconic survival game is making his return to video games. His new project, titled Coven of the Chicken Foot, signifies the debut of his studio, Wildflower Interactive, a project that draws heavily from the legacy he helped create centered around reactive companion characters.

An Unlikely Duo Embarks on a Unique Journey

Revealed at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot is described as a character-puzzle-platformer. You guide a seasoned spellcaster, a character who challenges typical power fantasies. The core idea came from a desire to deconstruct what it means to be a protagonist.

"Consider a scenario where you didn’t have the sword or shield? Perhaps you are not built for battle? An aging witch, for instance?" asked the creative lead. "The concept seemed deeply interesting to question the definition of a protagonist. A hero is about persevering against obstacles, but it’s also about selflessness and unwavering will."

A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work

Even though the title appears distinct visually, its core innovation evolves from the technology seen in The Last of Us. The game's conception was inspired by one pivotal question: "How could one create an AI partner even more reactive and adaptive to the player?"

The mysterious beast within this adventure isn’t an average NPC. Straley describes it as a toddler that reacts in three key stages. First, it investigates its surroundings, which can cause silly antics. Next, it enters a playful state. In the end, it analyzes to understand to learn how things work.

  • For example: If the creature sees Gertie slot a puzzle piece, it learns the motion without knowing the purpose.
  • This leads it to attempt to collect random objects and try slotting them, copying the action.
  • Understanding comes solely through accidental success a puzzle itself, creating a genuine learning moment.

A Personal, Player-Driven Narrative

This intricate technology is designed to create a unique story for each player. The director emphasizes that this project will be a contemplative journey of exploration as opposed to a linear, combat-centric story.

"Anytime I tried traditional three-act structure into this game, the excitement fell apart," Straley explained. "The liveliness in this partnership is that you as a player will inevitably create unique moments and stories than I will."

This commitment to emergent, character-driven storytelling, the new title represents both an evolution and a drastic departure from the director’s legendary previous titles. The project remains being built for Windows PC.
