It was a day of rest, and I found myself grumpy enough, topping off the family car. This was a common fuel stop that doubles as a grocery store, so you run the risk of ending up in line customers carrying goods of somewhat expensive items. It's an awful situation to unfold when the sole aim is to complete a simple refueling. Awful.

I was fourth among those waiting. A single person serving, a young woman. There was something unusual to her presence. When the faffer at the front of the queue had completed payment for his Viakal, a baked snack, and his box of eggs, It seemed to me I heard the cashier bid him an excellent day. Unusual. Perhaps I’d misheard, or perhaps she spoke and meant it ironically. I wondered if she might actually be a supporter in the war on delays, reflecting my irritation for those who delay people just getting gas such as myself.

I moved up, now third in line. The new leader of our group completed her gasoline purchase with commendable speed. Again, the phrase came: “Have a wonderful day.” No, actually, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. An American? At this location? Her tone suggested it, and no British person says to others those exact words, or merely a pleasant day. Quite out of place. It's uncommon to find people from America frequenting this area, and definitely not holding jobs in fueling spots or other places.

Second in line at last. Following a senior shopper engaged in a lengthy struggle with her carryall, her food items, her wallet and her rewards card. The process dragged on. After she finished, the woman also received the wish a wonderful day. Yes, American for sure. Confirming it was possible by making a witty remark to her, to check for that reaction as they gaze at you, without a smile, and reply with genuine earnest: “That is quite humorous.” However, nothing occurred of a jest to say.

I just had to settle the genuine warmth – or a mimicry of sincerity, essentially the same as identical in effect – while she stared me right in the eye, deep into my soul, and told me to have a great day. I felt better for it. It was a good thing.
